What is NZ's TyreWise scheme?
New Zealand has recently introduced the Tyrewise tyre stewardship scheme. It is the only Ministry of the Environment-accredited program to regulate end-of-life tyres, and involves an end-to-end strategy of managing the lifecycle of a tyre from importation, through retail and use, to removal and disposal. It is funded by a small fee on each tyre imported and sold. It was formed to put an end to illegal stockpiles of tyres, to prevent landfill and dumping of tyres each year.
As of now only 40% of the annual 6.5 million tyres are recycled, repurposed or used as tyre derived fuel. With the fee collected, Tyrewise aims to collect and process 80% of end-of-life tyres and 90% to be collected and processed by the sixth year.
